Almost There

Today we did 20! It was great! Felt soooo good and by the end I was like, Come On, lets do another 5. But I Didn't because the race is in 2 weeks to the day!

We were supposed to run one minute to 90 seconds slower than race pace. So, I ran it in 2:11. Theoretically, in a perfect world, this means that I could run it in 1:50. I don't expect this, like I said, the world isn't perfect.

This week, I have been taking it easy, kind of a self-induced taper. I ran Tuesday, Wednesday and Today. I have been feeling a little "Twinge" on the outside of my knees, so I'll listen, ice, and hope it clears up. Could be nerves. I am just sooo excited:)

Hm. 14 days. Can you believe it?!?! I can't.

I am thinking about going on a "Detox get all this bad stuff out of my system" before the race. Like just start eating better. It's been a bad 4 days in regards to eating. Birthday parties, long workdays, but *Shrugs*

That's All. Finish Strong.

Running Ahead

...not a great idea, especially if you think you know what you are supposed to do for that nights speed work but you really don't.

I ran with two other ladies, and we went, and I thought we were supposed to do 1 lap, 2 laps, 4 laps of the track, with a walk break in between. That's what I thought, and so that's what we did.

T: So, next week we will be sprinting 2 miles?
R: No, it stays the same next week
T: So, 1 mile
R: No, 3 laps is only 1200 meter (1.2km)
T: We did 4 laps
R: Oh.Well atleast you didn't get injured

I may be a good pace tiger, but I wouldn't run with me unless you plan of doing a little extra.

On that note, I am feeling really confident about my upcoming race. I must say that I am cautiously optimistic. Still nervous but optimistic.

I am going to divide the raceinto 4 seperate parts, this way at each part, I can assess where I am at, my time, and where I want to go from there. Sounds like a plan to me I think.

I don't want to get so confident I slack off though....

Keep me in line, guys, if you see too much of this confidence/cockiness

Easy Breezy

That's right. Yesterdays Tempo Run was Easy Breezy!

My Tempo Pace is 5:55/km, and usually I do it at that pace, but yesterday, I ran my Tempo run at a 5:8 pace...easy breezy! I did 6km in 31:55--5 minutes faster than I have EVER done it!

The race is in 17 days. Im ready. Im ready. Im ready! Tonight is speedwork and I feel just as good! Maybe this hydration thing works!

Tomorrow morning, if I still feel this good, I'll run in the morning. Don't know the distance, don't know whatever. Not too upset if I don't get there though! It's my mom's birthday, so there will be no Running in the evening.

I can't believe theres only 17 days!!! Ahhh!

Icecream

Good day!

The title of this post has nothing to do with what I am talking about but that is what I am eating.

I am pretty much recovered from Sunday's experience. I went to school today, and I am on my 2nd litre of water. I am mostly rehydrated according to the 'urine test' and am feeling all and all much better.

The clinic leader e-mailed me yesterday and reassured me that I was not undertrained, and that we all entitled to bad runs and that I nailed the last weeks 18k like a walk in the park.

Funny thing is it is that kind of stuff that really helps. I think that is the most beneficial thing about the clinics is the support.

...That being said I am going out to the Run Club tonight and pushing out 6km at a Tempo Pace. If I can. If I can't I can't. Like Joe said, it's too late in the game to get injured.

So that's the quick update. Now I have a lot of homework before I go for this Tempo run!

Take Care everyone,
Tiger

Be Careful of the Heat

So, I am alive. I didn't die. Although at some points yesterday I felt like I would. So here's the story...(and read it all because I don't want any of you to die.)

The morning was beautiful, 14 degrees celcius, not a cloud in the sky. At 8:30 am, I was at the Running Room, in my long sleeved clima lite shirt, my black nike running skirt, running room socks, and new shoes. Of course, I had 2 packages of sports beans, 3 gels and my fuel belt, which carries 6oz of water in every bottle, and there are four bottles on the belt. *(Note: I do not use all of this energy, but I do carry it, just incase those around me need it. Of course, I had on a hat, and some sunscreen.

The run called for 18 km, and our group leader had set it out so that we ran up the biggest hill in the area, and then up the only significant hill in the race.. (The race hill seems so much smaller after the first one.)
At about 8:35, we were on our way. I started running with the girls that I usually run with, but I felt significantly undertrained from the day befores run (long story short, I struggled through the whole 10k) so I decided to run with Carrie, whom I had run last sunday's run with. And I still felt like I was going to slow..( I didn't pay MUCH attention to pace, but I think it was like 6:35/kilometer) so I caught up with the head of the pack, which included our group leader, and then we chit chatted, and I met another lady, and then I kept clipping along.

I found the biggest hill in the area (well actually they warned me) and I bounded up that hill like it was nothing, and kept running down the street, and I was still doing good, although I was feeling a little tired. I had taken one gel before the hill and took another gel about 5 kilometer later, and I still felt fine, although I had sucked my fuel belt dry. I ran up the race hill, and I suddenly felt really cold.

I had the chills, I had a stomach cramp, I felt naseous, I wasn't sweating, I was really dizzy and I had trouble breathing.

I turned the 10 and 1's into I'll walk when I need to, and turned my ipod on. I think I walked more than I ran. People started to catch up with me, and someone walked with me for awhile, and then the group leader caught up with me, and walked with me. He thought that it might be "The Wall" . At this point we were only like 1 kilometer away from the store, so it was all gonna be okay. I went back to the store, and he suggested that I get gatorade from there, to replenish the salts or whatever. By the time the run was over it was about 22 degrees.

In the car on the way home to get my uniform, I was shivering, and under a big jacket. I was still nauseous and shaking. My mom bugged me "What day is it? Who's the primeminister" and whatever. My brother brought my stuff down stairs, and we dropped him at work, and then I went to work. I was feeling really crappy, shaking and I could barely stand up.

"It was the Wall" I told myself.

So I went to work, and I was almost crying, cause I felt sooo bad. I had what, 6 tables all day. It was a struggle to do them. I couldn't drink anything because my poor tummy wouldn't tolerate it. I went on my break, and still couldn't eat. I just laid there. I was still shaking and cold and nauseous. I also hadn't used the bathroom since 7 o'clock that morning.

I had ended up going home. Well, more like being forced to go home. One of the girls from work drove me home. I hope everything was good there. I don't like letting people down and they only had a few servers. We will see I guess.

I came home, and kind of laid there for 2 hours or so. I started to drink the gatorade that I had from the morning, which made my tummy more upset, but I forced myself to drink it. I didn't want to die you know.

After I finished the bottle I started to feel a little better. I hadn't eaten that day either. But I still wasn't trying. Then finally, at 11 o'clock that night, I went to the potty. For those of you not familiar with the "Urine Test," the darker the urine, the more water you need to drink. So I was pretty dehydrated I think.

Still, I haven't gone since then, so I am staying home today. I still have pain in my chest and I am colder than normal but I am feeling much better today.

SO...the point to this long post, Please be careful. Carry enough water so that you do not get dehydrated. I had Heat Exhaustion, or possibly the first signs of Heatstroke, which can be potentially life threatining. It is a really scary experience.

I hope everyone is well,

Keep Cool

The Journey...

Okay, It's a little early to be talking about the full journey of this half marathon training but now that I think about it, all the hard work is done. Well other than the race of course, but well, you know.

I was looking back through posts like this one that had me all nervous about tempo runs, and hill training and speed work. I guess it's the new stuff. And then it was 130 days. I looked over the posts where I told you about the Contagious Attitude, and all of the other positive things. Like for the very first time, running 8km. Wow. That's funny because now it seems like a peice of cake. Infact, when I do 8km, Im like YES! Not 18. Then there was the "Foot out the Door sydrome"...It's just amazing the difference.

Im so excited about this. The journey was amazing. And I guess that's really all that matters, right? I wrote one post about the reality of time...this is just so crazy to me! I really and truly can't believe it!

I am so excited. In just over 3 weeks, I will be standing at the start line, getting ready to race...wow.

I hope you have all enjoyed your journeys, and good luck to everyone who is running the SLC half marathon tomorrow!

Now to go enjoy the 22 degree celcius weather...

Duh Duh Duhn....

Speed work. Not so bad. Maybe I wasn't working hard enough. Rob was crazy today. Well maybe not but I swear he is out to confuse me. We did 200, 400,800, and in between we walked a lap. My lap (400m) time was 1:50. I'm okay with that. It felt okay though.. gotta push myself harder next week! You just wait Ill be crazy fast by race day (hahahahaha it's okay I know you can laugh)

So, you broke me down. I will show you what the half done product of my shirt looks like. The front of it says "Go Tiger Go" and the stripes are saved for special people like mom, dad, Sue, Science Teacher, etc. On the back it says "Rawr" and it's kind of a free for all with signatures and whitty comments...

So...apparently blogger doesn't want me to show them to you until it is done...(That's not an excuse, its really the truth...

Just a couple of funny comments..."Will I ever get my socks back?"..(I steal her running room socks on a regular basis)

"Spite can be a good thing. Don't trip" I do a lot of things because Rick tells me that I won't!

I ran speed work in different shoes because they were having a test drive and giving a way free socks. The things I will do for free socks :o)

I'm out, gotta do more homework!!!

Tiger*

(Gotta keep those marks up. I applied to 3 different universities and got into all of them! But I already accepted the one that I wanted! But that's a little cool.)

P.P.S...Im going to try hot yoga one of these days.

P.P.P.S...Im swimming Friday Morning

P.P.P.P.S...We're having a clinic after party!!!:o)

Im really gone now <3

Tempo SUCKS

I don't know if it was the weather but Holy butt nobody was into running. The run today, a 6km tempo run was Tough. Oh well. Tomorrow is speed work! YAY!! Im so excited. (I probably won't be saying that tomorrow) But everything is done and happens for a reason...

38 minutes, 6.21 km...blah blah blah...

BUT I started making my shirt! I talked to my science teacher today! I could not help but smile. He's like "I feel like Im letting you down," but that's okay! He planted the seed andfor that I thank him. And he's proud of me! He said that he's proud of me and I dont know I know that my parents are proud of me. Heck I like to think that the people I run with are proud to see me come so far, just as I am for them, but I don't know, he made me smile.

I have decided I am going to take a picture crossing the finish line .... (well duh I was going to do hat anyways,) but Im going to make him a copy and write on it "Thanks for planting the seed." He's a good mentor. It doesn't matter if he's not running.

I'm not going to post a picture of the shirt yet. I'll show you the journey!!

Finish Strong, Run fast, Have Fun

Strategizing

Hm. Today I will post twice, because I have 2 different things to post about and there will be about...ohh 5 or 6 hours in between.

So, Joe commented yesterday about Strategy and pre race nutrition and a great amount of other stuff...

And that got me thinking ...(to the point you could see the smoke barelling out of my ears)

Transportation: I will get to the race via my mom!! (I love you mom) She will awake with me at 5am, and acompany me to the start line. As soon as I have taken off from the start line, she will be meeting me at the finish line, with of course the camera, and the rest of my family.

What time to get there: The race director says to get there as early as you possibly can. The roads are shut down at 5:30 and the race starts at 7:30...so I'm thinking that we will be there by 6!!

Pre-Race Nutrition: Hmm.. I will start eating better. (BUt i Have been saying this since I started training and still haven't done it..) Lot's of bananas, nuts, and complex carbs like whole wheat pasta and bagels. I will also hydrate a lot before the race and pee a lot before the race too because I don't want to waste valuable race time using the potty. My pre-race meal will be at East Side Mario's (Mmmmmm)

Pre-Race Breakfast: Toast, with butter and honey. (Honey is supposed to be really good for runner's because it disolves slower than most.

During Race Nutrition and Hydration: I will carry a pod with sports beans, and probably about 4 gels with me just incase. I know that I will be spent by the end of the race. I will take Gels every 6 km and one before the race starts, about 30 minutes prior. I will munch on Sports beans during the race and drink when I am thirsty...(Or..when I am using Gels)

MP3 Player: Of course!! I will turn it down low though, because I want to feed off the crowds energy! Just an extra boost incase I need it. All of the songs will be upbeat.!!! Ohh and also I want to ask you..my blogger friends to each give me a song so that when I am running I will feel like you are right there with me, only several thousand miles away!!

Outfit: New Adidas Running shoes, Nike black Running Skirt, 'Go Tiger Go' shirt signed by everybody, pink Running Room anti-blister socks...

Bag Check: The race director (I got to talk to him luckily) says that you should have your bag checked by 7:15 at the latest to be at the start line for 7:30

Weather: Can't really control that. The weather historically though has been 16 degrees by the end of it, and sunny. Along lakeshore last year it was REALLLY windy though. Like I said, I can't control the weather but I can know the course

Race Strategy: Okay. This is the one that was most difficult for me. I was asking my mom and my step-dad and they kept saying..."Don't Trip," "Pretend you're running from something that is going to get you," "Put one foot infront of the other," but really...hmm strategy...

*Run with the 1:45 pace group...even if I just keep them in sight I am still going to run a good half.
*Don't go out too fast, kind of ease into my pace
*The way there is mostly uphill, so run the uphill at a steady pace, and then make up for it on the downhill
*Sprint the last 3km....just go all out and get there...

Whatchya think??

Warm-up: ...Im stumped. I guess just watch what everyone else is doing and follow them?! haha

That's all til next time. I have a pic in the next post!

Crossing The Finish Line...

I haven't blogged in a while because I haven't run in awhile, and my life is pretty boring. Or pretty busy. Your pick.

So, Today, I did an 18ish km run today. I say "ISH" because the fast folks in my clinic were not there, and so I, being the great and fast person that I am, was at the front. Almost. I followed two people whom I assumed were in my clinic, were not, and I ended up taking a wrong turn, turning back around, and then I finally met up with someone who sorta knew where they wre going...Yay me!

We ran up like 10867948750 hlls (Yes, I do exaggurate) and then through a marsh, over some sand, on a boardwalk and yes, on the roads and sidewalks. The first part of the run was FULLY uphill, and then downhill. Kinda like the race. We ran across the finish line and threw our arms up in the air and imagined everyone saying...

" Go Tiger Go!!! You can do it! Congratulations!! All that hard work has paid off!!!"

...and then we turned back around and ran back to the Running Room. My pace was ALL over the place. But I haven't run in a week. Apparently next weeks run is harder. Oh well, It's all for a reason.

I don't know how long the run was, but I felt every single step.

*******************************************************************************
I went to the Running Room on Friday, and bought new Running Shoes. Apparenlty I should be in a cushioning shoe instead of a stability shoe and that's the reason for my shin splint's and stuff. So, I will start breaking in my new shoes tomorrow. I also bought my shirt, and new socks.

*****************************************************************************
Speed Work starts on Wednesday. My job knows that I cannot work Tuesday or Wednesday. This is what Rob told me today:

"After doing speedwork you will be asking for hills!!! You push yourself so hard, you feel like you are going to puke, but you don't"

...Not looking too forward to that, but everything is done for a reason!

27 days, 27 days, 27 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, Im done, 27 days!

Finish Strong

Tiger

P.S. Don't worry, I will be blogging a lot more this week, because I will be running a lot more this week.

The Good, The bad, and The Ugly

Since I haven't blogged in awhile and this post could be like 1o8583943 pages long, so, what I will do for you my lovely blogger friends, is seperate it into "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly"

Ok

The Bad:
Haven't run since Monday. It's Thursday. Can't seem to shake this bug I have. Nonetheless, Im sucking it up today, and going for a run, no matter how slow it may be, it is still a run. And I don't even feel guilty!! (That last part might be a bad thing) I don't know how far I will go, maybe 10, whatever. I have hills scheduled on the dreadmill tomorrow morning!! Tuesday I skipped my Tempo run. Went for the stretching talk, and I was sore, so I decided that I would go out with my little brother instead. Wednesday I had to work. I made good tipsbut it ate up my ENTIRE afternoon, so none today.

The Good:
I have picked out the t-shirt that I am going to use to make my race shirt. I have also tracked down my old science teacher that was going to run it with me so I now know where to find him to get him to sign my shirt.

The Ugly

Well, actually it's not ugly. It's Beautiful. We are fostering 2 new kitty's. One's name is Lenny. He is already well adjusted and happy and fun, and playful. The other kitty, Fiona, is not doing as well. We have 2 weeks to decide if we want to adopt her. So. Hopefully. I want to re-name Lenny. I want his name to be Mere. This will be the first kitty to ever run a marathon!!! (Can you tell I want a dog?!)

Long Run Thoughts

I was thinking today,
During my run
yes, I can do both

I was so disgusted by how much trash was on the major streets.
It was pathetic.
The city should put more Garbage cans in yes,
But would it kill you to hold on to that cigarette butt, or chip bag for an extra 200 meters
Must you throw it on the ground?

And another thing,
You smokers drive me CRAZY!!!
Be respectful of everyone else,
If you are going to smoke, Do it in your own house
You don't need to subject subject everyone to it
Or...
Better yet, quit and use all the money you saved not smoking to buy a pair of running shoes

And patience
Nobody has patience anymore
Many years ago before microwaves, it took hours to get a meal
Now we want the bus to come 3 minutes earlier, the line to move faster, and the sun to rise sooner.
Has nobody heard that good things come to those who wait!?!
I was watching infomercials earlier while working on homework
And it was all about fitness...
Loose 10lbs in a week, 14 inches, 5 months til your in perfect shape

Hahaha, the things that we think about on the long runs
I don't know what else to say

..Tiger**

Here's the deal...

Okay, so here it is. Today's run. 17km., and then a warm down of about a kilometer.
The way there was mostly uphill. I took a Gel before the run. I ran about 11km uneventfully, and then...I had to use the potty. And I was in a semi-rural area...Yeah. So, I ran about another kilometer until I noticed that there was a gas station about hmm 500 meters away. So, I did this semi-waddle thing to the gas station and then used the potty.

After that there was a 500 meter downhill followed by a long slow uphill. Oh well. It was fine. I felt okay. Then yah, I guess that I just ran home... Total distance like I said was 17km and my average pace was 6:18/kilometer. Time overall was 1:47. Im not complaining. It was a pretty good run!!! Only like 4km until I hit 21!!! Oh, and instead of doing 10 and 1's, I did 15 and 1's.

No water during the run. Had gummy candy just incase but I didn't use them. I did however experience minor knee pain, and minor pain in the side of my hip which internet research has determined to be ITBS pain. Thus, after I write this I will be sitting on the couch with vegetables on my knee, and maybe a couple of bags along the outside of my leg.

Ohhh...no tummy ache. Didn't actually eat that much chocolate. But I ate enough;0)

Anyways, Happy Monday,

Tiger

Happy Easter

Ok, SO i have to make this quick.

This week was a fallback week, and fallback I did. I ran 1w this morning at 7:30. My phone died, my Garmin died. So, I didn't run what I was planning to run (Which Im not sure what that was) and I think I was really slow. Ohh well. I have planned myself out a half-marathon for later this week. Maybe Monday. No school, no work.

Hmm. Yah. So tomorrow I am just eating A LOT of chocolate. Happy Easter. So what if it is a white easter, that doesn't mean I can't eat as much chocolate as usual.

(Note, The next post will probably be me complaining about how much chocolate I ate, and how much my tummy hurts)

Anyways, Happy Easter or whatever to you and yours.

I have a plan for a good next week.

Tiger Out.

Getting Ahead of Myself

Yes. I am already planning for my next race.
I want to do the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon on Spetember 30th, 2007. This is a very flat, and fast course. I was talking to Rick who grew up in Toronto and he said the only major hill is by the park, and it is not much more than 50 meters.

Easy Breezy. I was also thinking I could maybe even...qualify for Boston. (It's in two weeks, so theres a lot of talk on the Runner's world forum which make me think.... I wanna do it!) Ha. I can dream right? But I was really thinking about it. To qualify I need a 3:40. That is a 5:21km, or an 8:30 mile. Pretty doable, because it's only like 7 seconds faster than my half marathon pace. Obiously like trying to keep that up would be tough but I have 178 days.

I won't start training until after my half marathon (In like 37 days). Ill be training some of the time here, some of the time in Kingston. Well, probably most of the time in Kingston. I might even start looking for marathon training programs.

Ha. One step at a time, one step at a time.

Sorry, I just had to put that out there in BlogLand.

Didn't run today. I had no voice. Came home from school early. Didn't go into work. Sick. Feeling better.

Will Blog again tomorrow morning after a run. WERE GETTING snow:( i dont want a white easter.

Substitutions

Basic Cooking says that you can substitute 1 cup of butter for 1 cup of margerine.
Today, I decided to substitute swimming for Running.

As much as I love my hills, The one thing that I will not run in is a thunder storm. I hate thunder storms. I have run in hot, cold, snow, sleet, rain, hail but no I will not run in a thunder storm. So.

There was length swimming at the local Community Centre. The length was measured in meters and each length was 25 meters.

I swam 32 lengths. The worst 40 minutes of my life I must say. After the first four laps my poor poor arms. So I started to alternate between the front crawl and the breast stroke, and that was better.

It was pretty weird actually. I was not sure exactly what it would feel like. I didn't know what to expect. I felt like I was sweating. I had a really red face, and I am telling you that was a really good workout. Wow. I felt so aqward. Like, I didn't know how to breath, and like my form was so off. How is a stroke supposed to look. Should you lift your arms really high kind of like you're reaching for the sky or keep them like parallel to the water, or non of the above. And I sink. I cannot float for the life of me. Hahaha.

Hm. The one thing that I can say is that it will be my new challenge. Monday, Tuesday and Friday's they also have early morning length swims. At 6:30am. So, I can handle that. I have to do something in the morning anyways. This will be my cross-training Monday after my long run and Friday. It's supposed to be thundering and lightning again tomorrow morning, so I am making my way to the gym tomorrow morning, and doing hills on the dreadmill. It's going to be tougher than outside I think.

Oh well, I am up for another challenge

That's the latest on my adventure. 39 days til my race!

I'll be ready, you just wait!!

Tiger :o)

Converted

I am now a Morning Runner. Meaning, I run in the mornings. Tried it Saturday morning and loved it, as you can see from my Last post. Just wonderful.

I also think that the fact that it's the first thing I do in the mornings, and can spend the rest of the day doing less important stuff.. (Like homework, and working and stuff) and...I work everyday but Tuesday this week. (I refused. I have hills. Hills...how I love them) Also, running in the morning just makes me feel good the WHOLE day. No tiredness. It's just good. The only problem I forsee is not having enough time to do easy recovery runs. Ohh well, I will figure it out.

On that note, I ran this morning. It was good. 4 km. 25 minutes. Felt good. Nice and warm. And Fred woke up. (Fred is my Garmin) He told me my average pace was 6.10/km. Im cool with the pace considering I ran 16.21 yesterday?

I know what your thinking...You ran 16.21 km yesterday Tiger? And you didn't tell us

Hold your horses guys, I was getting there!

(Im in a better mood in the morning too.. haha)

Yesterday I ran 16.21 km. My time was 1:41. Average pace: 6:16/km. Now, I have to say something about this. I ran an extra 210 meters, shaved 12 seconds of my average pace, and finished about 2 minutes faster. And we had bigger and more hills. Now, I think the marathon place should be sued for false advertising. Geez. They said that there is like 2 small inclines during the race, one at 10km, and one at 30 km. Trust me, there are hills. Oh well, member, I like hills. One thing I am glad I know that is there, is this crazy bridge that goes over a river. The sidewalks are narrow, and the railings aren't high enough. And cars go over top of it. So you have to decide which is better, have car zooming at your face feeling liek they're going to hit you, or looking over the side that's as deep as the Grand Canyon. I chose to just basically look at the ground and run very very fast. And it was raining. Hard. I loved it. Soo much fun. Until the end when the wind was cold near the lake. I hated that. Then, I was supposed to work at 4. Guess what my mom said to me...."Tiger, work called. They want you to come in for 12."

So I went in. After I had a shower because I was so cold. I met the closest person to my age. Her name is Sherill and she is 23.

Don't got time for much else. Talk to you tomorrow after hills!
